He's Two!!

Dear Littlest One,
We prayed for you and God blessed us in a big way!  These past two years have been amazing.  You are all boy (despite your love for the color pink)!  I've heard "boy" defined as dirt covered noise and I would say that just about sums you up!  You make me happy and tired and grateful and frustrated and proud and a better person, and I wouldn't change a thing!  I can't wait to see what God has in store for you!

I love you, Abel-baby!

Pinterest and a DIY project

Do you know Pinterest?  Oh, friends!  It's one of the great inventions of the technology world.  While Facebook and Twitter let you spy on people you barely know, Pinterest lets you put together great outfits, learn to make yummy treats, decorate your house beautifully, make unique crafts, and catalogue great sayings.

Of course, to be on Pinterest, I must be at the computer.  And, if I'm at the computer, I'm not making, decorating, or putting anything into action!

So, today I actually did something I pinned.  Thanks to this...

My 90s brass doorknobs that looked like this...

Are now updated to look like this...

And most importantly, I can say that Pinterest isn't a waste of time!

Running the Race

Hebrews 12:1-3  Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.  And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.  For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Today was a long day.  A very, very long day!

Being a homemaker with three boys, two of whom are extremely active preschoolers, is much like a race most days.  I am on the run from the time I hear the first peeps from the monitor early in the morning until all three boys are in bed...and sometimes afterward.  I race to fed the children and get them dressed.  I race through my shower (on the days I take time for one) and morning routine.  I race here and there running errands, taking children to school, practices, and appointments, and getting through my to-do list.  When the children make wrong choices, I race to teach them a different way.  When things begin to get chaotic, I race to provide structure.

All that racing makes me tired.  Some days (like today) I feel like I'm in last place.  Everyone, including my children, are ahead of me.  I run and run and don't feel like I've made any progress.  Then, when everyone is asleep and the house is quiet, I sit.  It's then that I remember that I'm running the race that is marked for me.  It's then, in the quiet, when I'm still, I'm reminded why I run the race.

As I read recently:

"When I fix my eyes on Him my race takes on a whole new meaning.
I realize that my race needs to be one of love; I need to reach my children with God’s word before the world whispers into their ears.
I realize that my race needs to be to show my husband the respect he can get nowhere else, because the workplace is racing to remove his focus from his family.
I realize that my race needs to be towards making my house a home, because the world is racing to open its arms to my family before I do.
Running my race has its hills and valleys.  Hurdles can slow me down at times but it is the race that God has me called me to run.
Because my eyes are fixed on him,  I will not grow weary… I know that before I even began my race He carved out the path I would take.
Because I know that He ran a race I could never imagine having to run."

So, I will persevere, knowing that tomorrow is a new day and my strength will be renewed!  What a blessed assurance!

Dating My Hubby

As a result of the success of 2011's "Mission:  Happily Ever After" weekly at-home date nights, I gifted Matt with monthly preplanned on-the-town date nights for Christmas this past year.  This doesn't replace the weekly date nights, it supplements them!  In January, we headed out to a Lebanese restaurant in downtown.  Yummy!  This past Wednesday, we had our February date night.  I dropped the little boys off for their own "date night" with Mema and PaPa on Wednesday morning--thanks, Mema and PaPa!  Then, it was home for a little primping.   Matt and I took a moment to snap this picture, then armed with a gift card for dinner from my parents and theatre tickets from Matt's (thanks, everyone!!), we headed out.

It was such a blessing to be able to indulge in a night out together alone.  Now, don't get me wrong, I love my children and enjoy spending time with them, but in the hierarchy we honor, Matt comes before my children.  It is our job to model marriage for our boys and if our marriage isn't strong, we can't be the parents God has called us to be.  If a parenting team falls apart, the ones who feel it the most are the children.  So, we believe our marriage is a priority!

At dinner, we prayed over our food and our marriage.  We dined on steak, salad, asparagus, vegetables, baked potatoes, all prepared deliciously.  The conversations were many and varied.  As with anytime extended alone time, we caught up on each other.  We shared and we laughed and we bonded.

With full bellies, we headed to the theatre downtown for Les Miserables, my favorite Broadway musical.  We held hands in the darkened theatre as the actors sang about love and war.  We laughed to ourselves when Matt jumped at the sound of a gunshot.  During the curtain call, I was smiling ear to ear.  The actors were fabulous and the musicians were amazing, but...so was my date!

Happy Valentine's Day...

...to the ones who loved me first and modeled love for me

...to the one who challenged me to open my heart and still makes it flutter

...to the ones who proved that being a mother is like having your heart walk around outside your body and have given me a glimpse of God's unconditional love here on earth

...to the One who loved me so much He send His son to die for my sins so that I can have eternal life.  God is Love!

I hope your Valentine's Day is blessed beyond measure!
